New Multicultural Literature Class at SPHS

This year, South Pasadena High School offered an additional option for ninth grade English. Students had the choice to take a new pilot course titled “Multicultural Literature.”

This course focuses on multicultural perspectives and personal identity with an emphasis on developing student reading and writing skills. Through the study of fiction and non-fiction from various viewpoints, the course seeks to empower students to think critically about the world around them and to develop a more complex understanding of the human experience.

“The students are intrinsically motivated by the deep personal meaning and the cultural connections they make from the course content,” said Principal Janet Anderson.

English teachers, Ms. Cutler, Ms. Gill, and Ms. Kadri, worked collaboratively to design the course outline after extensive research and are each teaching at least one section of the course. Meaningful feedback will be provided to determine what form the course will take in future years.
