Congratulations to SPHS juniors, Henry Dorosin and Andrew Kowal, for advancing to the California State Championship of National History Day. Last week, the Los Angeles County Office of Education announced that these students finished in the top two out of 300 participants who competed in this year's History Day LA Contest.
This year's theme was, "Communication: The Key to Understanding." Both students competed in the category of Historical Research Paper. Henry Dorosin's research paper is titled, "Tolerance in Turbulence: How Thomas Jefferson's First Inaugural Address Communicated the Importance of Freedom and Unity in America." Andrew Kowal's research paper is titled, "The Greensboro Protests: How the Sit In Movement Communicated and Combated the Horrors of Segregation."
Under the direction of English and social science teacher Oliver Valcorza, SPHS has competed in History Day LA for two years, and during both years, SPHS students have advanced to the state contest for National History Day. This year’s group has been working together since October 2020, and the victory is a testament to their hard-work and dedication.
Go, Tigers!
